TheVerge - Asus Transformer Prime Review

After the Engadget review now we see The Verge review from Joanna Stern. Check out Stern's full review HERE

The Prime is an incredible piece of hardware. It has a marvelous display, form factor, the best camera on any tablet yet, and it’s new quad-core internal organ puts more graphics and gaming power in your hands than you’ll know what to do with (quite literally in fact, until the games start appearing). And then there’s also the added keyboard dock that adds over 10 hours of battery life and really does transform the tablet into a highly-usable laptop.

But a true laptop replacement isn't about raw power; it's about the productivity that power enables, and Honeycomb just isn't up to the task. The operating system hasn't been optimized for that ridiculous processor or that beautiful display, the app selection remains pitiable at best, and it's just not that intuitive to use. Asus may have produced a brilliant piece of engineering at a price that's competitive with the iPad, but Android hasn't yet matched iOS when it comes to unlocking all that potential. Android 4.0 (or even Windows 8, which we expect to run on this very sort of hardware) might just rectify some of these issues, but one thing is for sure: the laptop of the post-PC world needs the software to match it.

ExoPC now $399 at Microsoft Store

With newer Windows 7 Tablets arriving the ExoPC looks rather dated. Still this Windows 7 Tablet is one of the cheapest to feature Windows 7 on a Tablet. In addition ExoPC has the unique Exo UI.

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime review by Engadget

We all have been waiting for the Tranformer Prime to launch but while you wait you can read up on the device at Engadget. They have written a review of the Android Tablet. You can read the entire review HERE

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 has had a long run as the top-tier Android tablet in the 10-inch size, but that position has now properly been usurped. The original Transformer was a very good tablet and it successor steps up another notch. The Transformer Prime is thinner and lighter than the rest and, with 32GB of storage available for a dollar under $500, it's a better deal than most of the top-tier contenders.

The dock, however, is a bit of a tougher sell. If you need crazy battery life on the road then it's definitely a good choice, even if you won't be relying on that cramped keyboard too often. In fact, the less you have to use that part the better, but it's still a perfectly usable way to enter URLs and it sure beats the pants off of any virtual, touchscreen text input method .

For the moment the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime is the best Android tablet on the market. All hail the new king.

time off

With only about 3 hours before I leave, I'm finally ready. I'm actually surprised that there's still lots of space in my luggage! I have this feeling though that I forgot something but then again, that gives me a reason to shop (thus, the extra luggage space)! :) A couple of days away with my travel buddies is just about right to kick off the holiday season. If this would be like our Hongkong trip last year, then it will surely be a blast! :) See you in a few days, Manila! :)

last minute

My flight's in just a couple of hours and I haven't packed anything yet! My things are a mess and I haven't figured out which clothes to bring. I'm usually more organized whenever I travel but I was out the whole day and got home by night time already. Good thing this is just a weekend trip and I'm limited to just a 15kg luggage. I can do this!

Kindle Fire SOFTWARE UPDATE, VERSION 6.2 ready -- Two ways to get it.

KINDLEFIRE SOFTWARE UPDATE VERSION 6.2 IS READY

Kindle Fire Software Update, V6.2 is available online, and downloadable at the link if the update isn't already on your Kindle Fire.

The 'announcement' was made by customers on a Kindle Forum thread after they saw the update appear on their Kindle Fires.  Mine is still at v6.1 and the 'Update your Kindle" button for "System Version" setting is grayed out.

Along with the improvements listed on the update page, one forum member mentioned "way faster web browsing!"  (I've no idea if that is so or if it was just a faster experience at the time.)

Amazon's directions:
' If you are not sure what software version you're running, tap the Quick Settings icon, tap "More," then tap "Device."  If your System Version begins with "Current version: 6.2," you are running the latest software.  If your System Version begins with "Current version: 6.0 or 6.1," follow the instructions [at that page] to take advantage of all of the features available for Kindle Fire.
. . .
To update your Kindle, ensure
. you are connected to a Wi-Fi network and that
. your battery is fully charged.

Tap the Quick Settings icon in the upper right corner of your device,
  then tap "Sync."

The software update will automatically download in the background and will be applied once download is complete and the device is asleep. '

The above describes a semi-automated update.

However, if you don't have a WiFi connection at the time and want to do this, you can do a MANUAL update at the software update page for Kindle Fire, where Amazon has step-by-step directions.

What was changed?
As too often happens, Amazon gives no notes on what is being updated, outside of saying that the update "provides improvements to the operation of your Kindle Fire."

Some possible answers by customers in the forum (Amazon should be doing this, with any software update.)

Customer James G. Henderson posted in the Amazon Kindle Forum thread the following improvements noted:
' Better parental controls in the ap store, more responsive touchscreen, back button works better, less spazzy carousel navigation, and typing is improved. '
I don't know if he just noticed these things or if some Mobileread Forum members have again looked at some of the changes in the code and determined the above, which they try to do for each update where Amazon chooses not to communicate what was improved.

No one has reported the hoped-for carousel-content changes customers have requested in large numbers on the Amazon forum -- that we be able to NOT display (via an option setting) every book in our archive.  Maybe it's there but not noticed yet.

If you notice changes and have time, please let us know what you find.   Thanks.

Kindle Fire gets Cyanogen Mod 7

Kindle Fire gets Cyanogen Mod 7 finally but it is an early build. At the moment this build is lacking touchscreen and you lose Amazon integrated features. The one good thing is that they already got Wifi to work with Cyanogen Mod 7 for Android Fire.

Rumor Microsoft Office Coming to iPad

Microsoft will bring a tablet-friendly version of Office to the iPad sometime in 2012, according to The Daily.

The Daily reports from unknown sources that Office will be available for both iPad and Mac OS X Lion in 2012. This makes sense since Microsoft is a software company and can make a lot of money selling a Tablet version of Office as well as a Mac OS X Lion version.

Hidden Radio & BlueTooth Speaker

Hidden Radio & BlueTooth Speaker is a minimalist designed Bluetooth Speaker/Radio. What makes this product stand out is the lack buttons and bulky exterior that some speakers have.

The Hidden Radio & BlueTooth Speaker hides it's functions until you twist the top which increasing the volume of the speaker up to over 80dB. The speaker will work wireless using Bluetooth to connect to iPads, Android Tablets, Smartphones and other gadgets. In addition AM/FM radio is added as another function of HiddenRadio.

The Hidden Radio & BlueTooth Speaker is small in size but big in sound and features. I can't wait to see this product made once they get funding from their Kickstarter account.

Black Friday $180 Lenovo laptop from BestBuy has only 1 speaker

People who waited in line for a Black Friday $180 laptop from Best Buy got a major problem. The problem is that the laptop only came with 1 speaker. Some Geek Squad workers were saying that it may have come with 1 speaker as this is a cheaper laptop made especially for Black Friday. Lenovo on their own forums however state that this is a defective laptop and should be repaired. So far no solution to the problem but the admin at Lenovo forum has stated he will look into this and a solution to send back laptops to the repair facilities.

An early gift!

I love getting gifts and Brian gave me a good one today.  You know he makes the wooden bowls, he has been busy lately.  His bowls are all beautiful and I do love each one!

So today, he gave me a new box!  It is really pretty and heart shaped.  I love it and immediately put it on the fireplace.  Not sure that it will be staying there, but for now that is where it will reside!

I've been a bit lax in my workouts lately, but I've sure been complaining, so I am planning on getting my act together and getting back on track.

I am also considering posting my eating on here again.  Not so that you all know what I am doing, but more so for myself.  If I know I have to take a photos of it for everyone to see, then I will be more strict with myself.  It's time to buckle down and get serious again!  I don't want to be the statistic that gains the average 8 lbs over the holidays.

TONIGHT, MIDNIGHT, ENDS "PENNY PINCHER" SALE ON *ALL* CELL PHONES

And why does that matter to Kindlers?

I finally broke down after all these years and got a 3G Data Plan for my cell phone except that my cell phone is 6 years old and its keypad is like a calculator - a number pad, with 3 alpha characters on most numbers and not fun at all to try to type an email with.  In other words, I've had a dumbphone, but that's been fine since I didn't want to pay data charges.

Now, I've decided I want a phone that can provide hotspot/WiFi support for my Kindle Fire and Kindle Touch and of course my 10.2" netbook which I always have when traveling.  This way I could be anywhere and have WiFi available to all these devices, as long as my 3G/4G smartphone has a signal (in most places it will).

If you've followed this blog's reminders of Black Friday week and the usual holiday offers that are on Amazon's pages (the name is "Cyber Monday" today), you'll have seen the AmazonWireless deal active for a couple of days, which offers most of the top current smart phones today for $0.01 even if they cost $600 Unlocked and normally $200 with a 2-year plan.

After browsing the AmazonWireless penny-for-a-new-cellphone offer, I decided on the Samsung Galaxy S II in the image above.  It topped most recent gadget-site 'best' lists and was #1 at Consumer Reports during the summer.  It arrived in the U.S. a couple of months ago under this name if bought from AT&T (who chose the slightly smaller original and internationally popular 4.3" screen), is also at Sprint, where it's called the Epic Touch 4G, and is now also at TMobile, with its basic name Samsung Galaxy S II -- the latter two vendors decided on a 4.5" screen instead but with the same number of pixels.

Most of that was just to show you that the cell phone penny deals are on very good phones as well as on average ones.

To be eligible for this deal, it has to be a new plan and not an extension of an existing one.  Many of us are past our 2-year agreements and are able to move to another carrier, where we are "new subscribers" and eligible to the deal.  Some families have new memberships.  At any rate, the offer ends tonight.  If ordering one, you have to supply the account number for your current cell phone if a transfer of phone number is needed.

Some of the Sprint CDMA-based cellphones have been suffering from Loss of Signal events during the day since late September, and Samsung stated they'd get a maintenance update out but they've been silent on that since then, two months ago, so there are articles on that.  Here are two. (1) and (2).

At any rate, this is a heads-up that it's the last day of this unusual offer, and if you're eligible, it's really a good sale.

I was surprised that AT&T has a remarkably reasonable price for the basic calling plan for those who don't make or receive that many calls a month and they offer hotspot support via the phone to your other devices, for $20/mo. more if part of that package.

A set of Kindleworld's articles on the new Kindle models

ARTICLES ON NEW KINDLE, SO FAR

I've reorganized the Kindleworld website's "Articles on New Kindles" set found near the top of the Reference section in the right column of the article pages.

This blog entry is especially for those on Kindle Edition blog subscriptions, who wouldn't see this set in the Kindle-edition, which brings only the daily articles.  But it should also be helpful to those who don't have time to browse the Reference column at the website.

On the Kindle editions of the blog, the new Kindles (and sometimes even the Kindle 3's) can click through most article links to access the linked articles without waiting an impossible time for page loads.

With Kindle 2's or earlier, the load-times are pretty difficult.  All can of course also access articles, reference sets, and external links at the website ( kindleworld.blogspot.com ).

Each time I draw attention to the free website, the blog loses Kindle-edition-blog subscribers who didn't know it exists :-) -- and it'd be helpful to blog subscribers if Amazon would add a link to the external website on all the Kindle editions.

Thanks to all who support the site this way, and I'm hoping most subscribers will still see value in having the most-recent 25 blog articles at hand and searchable offline via the Kindle edition of the blog each day.

Those with Kindle Touch's will find them several times faster for accessing the web than the keyboard models (faster processor and direct-access to links), which would be a big reason for Amazon's not offering free 3G web browsing on the new Kindles.   The speedup should be especially useful for those following links on the Kindle editions of blogs in general.

Unofficial ICS port on the Asus Transformer

If you got in on the Asus Transformer black friday deal then your in luck as someone has already ported ICS to the tablet. This is an unofficial port of ICS from CyanogenMod team.

parol

The little one had an assignment last Friday to bring a parol to school which will be used to decorate the classroom for the holidays. When I got home, I asked him about it...

Me: Did teacher like the parol you brought to school?
Gabby: Huh? What parol?
Me: The one that mommy bought for you. Remember the big colorful star?
Gabby: I didn't bring a parol to school.
Me: But that's your assignment, right? Mommy even put it in a plastic bag so you can carry it.
Gabby: Oh! You mean the lantern? It's a lantern Nang-nang. I brought a lantern to school. Teacher liked it! She said it was beautiful!

My bad! Lantern nga naman hindi parol! Goodluck when he starts studying Filipino!

The Magic of the Boy Who Lived

Since the last installment of the Deathly Hallows came out, I've been waiting for the release of the complete collection of the Harry Potter movies but I was disappointed when it finally came out in Amazon. I was expecting a special edition box set with all the extras and special features but what came out was simply an 8-disc set of the movies with NO extras! The packaging wasn't even special. Very disappointing indeed.

Amazon UK on the other hand had a special edition, limited number release of the complete series containing 19 discs - a blu-ray and DVD version of each movie plus 3 discs filled with special features. That's what I like! But getting it is out of the question...no idea how I'd have it shipped! Sadness again.

I've read somewhere that Warner Brothers will actually release the ultimate box set (which is waaaay better than what's currently released in the US) but not until the end of 2012! I was resigned to wait for another year until I heard that there's a version similar to the one in UK, which was just released here in Manila a couple of weeks ago. After some researching, I learned that there were only 100 pieces of it distributed to the Odyssey and Astrovision branches all throughout Manila - and most of it were already reserved. Waaah! I so wanted to get my hands on it!

I tried the Astrovision branch in Festival Mall the other day and in Greenbelt yesterday but they were out of stock already. I was in Town earlier and just for the heck of it, I checked out Odyssey though I wasn't expecting that they'd have it...but lo and behold, I was in luck! It was the last stock (only 3 were delivered to that branch) so with no second thoughts, I got it. The complete series comes in this beautiful box...

There's also a certificate authenticating that the copy I had is the 59th out of the 100 numbered editions:

Here's what's inside:

16 discs of Harry Potter magic! Each movie comes with a Special Features disc...

And there's a 48-page album (which looks the same as the one that Hagrid gave Harry at the end of the 1st film) with photos from the 8 films. This doesn't do justice to the actual album where the pictures are printed in a beautiful glossy finish...

It also comes with a bonus DVD about the making of the Deathly Hallows Part 2:

It's quite pricey at P5,500 but so worth it! A must-have for any Harry Potter fan :)

NOTE: The alerts are quoted from Joyce's collecting of mostly temporarily-free books.  They're *not* recommendations by anyone but are a popular, unfiltered daily set of forum release-alerts by Joyce, logged here for those who don't or can't make it to the forums.  The eBooks are often no longer free within days, sometimes, within hours.  Thanks to Joyce for gathering and organizing them for us.

*** [ Friday, Nov 25 - Joyce writes: ]
I see hope in the faces of the flowers in my garden. They are beautiful in the new morning, opening like smiles and shining with promise. Someone's thinking about you, and that is me!

After today, I will be going on vacation. Annie will be posting the freebies for you while I'm gone. She is a very special friend to me, and has been so kind to help and be sure that the freebies are posted and you are not forgotten. I will see you when I return on Thursday, December 1st. I will miss each of you very much.]
