Current Forum Alerts about Discounted-books
Sept. 23-24

As there are no newly-free books as of 8 am this morning and only one yesterday, here's some different reading, probably of interest to some Kindlers.

Public Library Lending questions at the forums, and Lendle's Kindle borrowing
. How many e-books does your public library have?
. Public librarians: what has been your Kindle/Overdrive experience?
. Changes to lendle (This is Kindle owner-to-Kindle owner lending.)
The changes include incentives for offering loaners, and it's an appreciated service that sees a lot of tension right now.

WELL, Joyce later found one free book announced book after all, and the description indicates a sense of humor.

The Zen Wheel of Life Mantra: A Song of Luminous Wisdom and Love
Author: Tai Sheridan
Genre: Spirituality - Religion - Buddism

DESCRIPTION: Zen Priest and Poet Tai Sheridan's Wheel of Life Mantra is a poetic expression of the Bhavacakra, an ancient mandala that presents the most significant wisdom teachings of Buddhism. It is used to contemplate the causes and conditions of suffering, and as a guide to non-dual wisdom, loving kindness, compassion, and equanimity. The Wheel is constructed of four concentric circles around a hub, each circle representing different areas of human experience and awareness. Beginning with the innermost circle and moving outward they represent dimensions of anguish, consequences, psychological experience, and the workings of consciousness. The wheel itself is an expression of the essential Buddhist teachings of no-self (nothing exists as a separate entity), impermanence (everything changes), and co-dependent origination (all phenomena arise simultaneously in reality in the present moment). The Wheel, like all Buddhist teachings, is an encouragement for finding the way to peace, love, and light.

No Turning Back (Descendants of Ancients)
Author: Sharon T. Rose
Genre: Action - Adventure

DESCRIPTION: Untold ages ago, two races were at war. The battles raged unchecked, driving them across the universe. Eventually, they reached equilibrium; neither side could gain over the other. When they came across a poor, stone-aged planet that would eventually be called Alluvia, one side chose to alter the terms of the war. The human inhabitants of Alluvia little dreamed of events beyond their skies until the day some of their own were taken by those whom they would call "Sukkers," turning the once-ordinary men, women, and children into Drones, pawns used in the great war. The ravages caused by Drones seemed to decide the outcome of the war until the other side also took some of the humans. The small group chosen by those known only as the Ancients were not made mindless. Genetically altered with the DNA of the Ancients, they became "super-humans", endowed with incredible abilities and able to hold back the Drone armies of the Sukkers. The Ancients disappeared long ago, and the Sukkers still claim hosts at will. Alluvia has grown since that long-ago time, with countries, cultures, religions, and wars of its own. Their own technology rises, looking to rival and supplant that left by the Ancients to their Descendants. And The War still rages. No one remembers why the Ancients fought; no one really cares. Alluvia did not start it, but it is left to them, to the Descendants of the Ancients, to finish it somehow.

Irate policyholders found comfort in his soothing words; recalcitrant contractors became polite and respectful. It would have been perfect if not for his lecherous and treacherous hormones. A humorous look at love and lust in the iAge where consumerism runs rampant and integrity can go and get stuffed.

Our Quirky Guide to Seattle
Author: Various Contributors
Genre: Travel - US

DESCRIPTION: We're not travel experts. Rather, we're a group of friends and coworkers, a bit ambitious and a bit peculiar, who enjoy our time with each other and enjoy partaking in what Seattle has to offer. We work hard, and it leaves us little time to play. We try to maximize our limited leisure time by pursuing our passions, going to places we love, and having fun. This is not a complete book of Seattle activities. Instead, it is a collection of our favorite activities. You will find a full range of arts, dining, outdoor, and travel suggestions. Perhaps one of our favorites will become one of yours. The forty-two of us were able to come together, collaborate, and create a book. This was possible only through the flexibility of self-publishing. We feel fortunate to live in Seattle. It is a place that is always raining, just finished raining, or is about to rain. It makes us appreciate our time outdoors and the beautiful scenery even more. We hope our words will help you explore, taste, smell, feel, and hear all things Seattle.

Harvard Envy
Author: Andrew S. Rosen

DESCRIPTION: Harvard Envy is a chapter excerpt from Change.edu coming out October 18, 2011.
Exploring the limitations of the exclusive, tradition-bound world of higher education, innovator Andrew S. Rosen, chairman and CEO of Kaplan, Inc., delivers a vision for making a world-class college experience available to students of all backgrounds. Little is known about John Harvard, who bequeathed his books and £779 to a fledgling college on the Charles River in the 1630s, but the institution that bears his name has become the gold standard for universities worldwide. Tracing this fascinating history, and the history of American higher education overall, "Harvard Envy" raises important questions about the effect of super-elite campuses on America's educational landscape. Just as Congress hotly debated whether to approve land-grant colleges in the nineteenth century, opening the doors of higher education to farmers, we face a competitive new demand for a highly educated workforce. Yet many colleges continue to insist on limiting access, and many college applicants continue to believe that exclusive institutions deliver the highest quality. With an eye-opening examination of the U.S. News and World Report college rankings and other barometers, "Harvard Envy" takes an enlightened look at how universities allocate resources and talent. Offering an inspiring alternative to the Ivory Tower playbook, Andrew S. Rosen presents a bold, cost-effective new vision for a truly competitive higher education system that serves both individual and national interests.

Club College
Author: Andrew S. Rosen

DESCRIPTION: Club College is a chapter excerpt from Change.edu coming out October 18, 2011. On college campuses nationwide, luxury and learning go hand-in-hand, keeping the price tag for higher education out of reach for many Americans. Education innovator, and chairman and CEO of Kaplan, Inc., Andrew S. Rosen examines today's resort-style campus, providing inspiring solutions for stopping the spending spirals and making college affordable for all. Despite the financial crunch, many American universities have become surprisingly lavish over the past decade, providing state-of-the-art recreation facilities, bistro-style dining, spectacular residence halls that rival fine hotels, and "free" amenities such as Kindles, not to mention multi-million-dollar stadiums and coaches' salaries starting in the high six figures. Showcasing these extraordinary campuses, "Club College" captures the new economic models of higher education, which often divert funds from academics to gain a competitive edge in attracting an elite group of students. On this fascinating tour, Andrew S. Rosen proposes bold new alternatives that focus our nation's dollars on learning. Poised to spark a dialogue about our nation's higher education system, "Club College" makes the classroom the centerpiece of college once again, opening doors to careers for a broad range of talented individuals-arguably our greatest economic asset. Endless War: Middle-Eastern Islam vs. Western Civilization
Author: Ralph Peters
Genre: Political - International Security - Current Events

DESCRIPTION: In his latest, author and columnist Peters (Fighting for the Future) puts the contemporary conflict between Islam and the West into the context of 14 centuries of warfare, making a clear and compelling case for rethinking the U.S. approach. When Muslim armies exploded out of Arabia in the 7th century, the armies of Dark Age Europe didn't know how to stop them. While the Muslims fought as a unified, cohesive army, the Europeans were loyal only to their feudal lords, fighting in small units, or simply man-to-man; fast-forward to the present of Iraq and Afghanistan, where the U.S.-led coalition is the unified force, while Islamist fanatics work as disorganized bands, attacking each other as often as coalition targets. Contrary to what Western leaders may think, Peters insists, the war on terrorism is a war of religion-at least for militant Islamists. From this vantage, Peters takes Western leaders to task for a 60 year policy of rational negotiation; in Peters's thorough analysis, the War on Terror is an emotionally-driven endeavor, and an effective strategy for victory will only arise once political and military leaders recognize the motives, internal and historical, that drive our foes.

In The Light of You
Author: Nathan Singer

DESCRIPTION: In furiously fast-paced prose, Singer gives voice to 16-year-old loner Mikal Fanon and his infatuation with the white power movement. A family move lands Mikal in a high school riven by racial conflict, where he finds himself friendless and the target of black-on-white violence. Then he meets the charismatic Richard Lovecraft, leader of a gang of neo-Nazi skinheads, and the feeling of being a part of a group gives Mikal an unprecedented sense of empowerment. Soon he is avidly participating in a horrific series of assaults on gays, blacks, and other minorities, until the evening the skinheads take on a group even more ruthless than their own. Singer vivifies the attraction of the white power movement, drawing both the long, boring stretches spent playing video games and the heated moments of violence, set against a backdrop of sex and metal music. Mikal's ultimate moment of redemption is not drawn with the same convincing detail, but by then, Singer's percussive prose will have worked its magic. An unblinking portrait of young white rage.
