It all started with Nancy Drew's The Secret of the Old Clock when I was in Grade 2 (or was it 3?) and from then on I was a regular at our school's library and bookstores (it was only National and Goodwill back then). I went through the whole Sweet Valley Twins phase in my early grade school years, and I eventually moved on to Sweet Valley High and University until early high school. Sweet Dreams was also a classic (PS I Love You is my fave!) and I remember regularly going to Goodwill to check out the new stock.
I got my passion for reading from my mom and sister and I don't think twice when spending on books - it's an investment, as I'd always say. Books never go out of style and even decades after, I find myself re-reading the books I started with. Just a couple of years ago, the entire Nancy Drew Mystery Series was reprinted in the classic yellow hardbound (though it's now glossy instead of the matte finish) but even if I was already in my early 20s, I still wanted to get my own copy of all the books. Thanks to my family who contributed (they gave about 70% of the books as gifts one Christmas), I was able to complete the entire set - all 64 books!
I'm still as much as a bookworm as I was before - but I've 'upgraded'. I now have my Kindle which I love coz I can literally bring my entire library wherever I go. No more bringning heavy paperbacks on long flights. But I still buy the actual paperbacks and hardbounds especially if it's something I really like and if the cover's nice (I have a thing with nice book covers and how it would look like all lined up in the shelves) - nothing still beats the smell of a new book and the crisp pages as you turn each one. I'm a regular at Powerbooks and Fullybooked and more often than not, I don't leave empty handed.
I have a looong list of books which I'm yet to read but that won't stop me from buying new ones. Books are one of those things that's ok to have too much of...and reading is definitely one thing that I'll never get tired of doing :)
